X (Twitter) video specs: length, size and format limits

By the Overnight Cut team, a product video studio for software teams · Updated · 3 min read

Short answer

On a standard X account, a video can be up to 140 seconds long and 512 MB, in shapes from 1:2.39 to 2.39:1, at up to 1920 by 1200 (or 1200 by 1900 vertical), 40 frames per second and 25 Mbps. Premium accounts can post longer videos, but X's own pages give different figures.

X is where many software launches happen first, and its video limits are tighter than most platforms. A two and a half minute demo that posts fine on LinkedIn will not post on a standard X account. These numbers come from X's own help page, linked at the end, and were checked on 16 October 2026.

X video specs for standard accounts

SpecStandard X account
LengthUp to 140 seconds
File sizeUp to 512 MB
Aspect ratio1:2.39 to 2.39:1
Smallest size32 × 32
Largest size1920 × 1200, or 1200 × 1900 vertical
Frame rateUp to 40 frames per second
BitrateUp to 25 Mbps

These are the limits for uploading in the app or on the web. The 140 second limit is the one that matters most for product videos: a launch film fits easily, but a full walkthrough usually does not.

What about X Premium?

Premium subscribers can post much longer videos. The help page we checked gives up to 16 GB and long running times at 1080p, while X's developer documents and other help pages give different numbers. Because the figures do not agree, we do not give one here. If you rely on Premium for a long video, check X's current Premium page on the day you post.

The vertical size catch

X lists a maximum of 1200 × 1900 for vertical video. A standard vertical export is 1080 × 1920, which is twenty pixels taller than that number. In practice X may scale it down, but the safest choice for an important post is to test the upload first, or to export the vertical version at 1080 × 1900 or smaller.

How to fit a product video into X

Before you post, run the exported file through our free video specs checker. It checks the X limits above, along with LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, and tells you what to change.

Export settings that work for X

A safe export for X is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, at 1920 × 1080 for landscape or 1080 × 1350 for a 4:5 feed version, at 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 frames per second, with a bitrate well under 25 Mbps. A 30 second film exported this way is far below the 512 MB limit, so it uploads quickly and leaves room to post longer cuts later.

Using video for launches and releases on X

A short clip of one feature working is often the most shared kind of post on launch day. Our guide on how to announce a new feature with a short video covers what to show. If you need the film and the X thread made together, Launch Day includes 6 and 15 second cuts and the posts to go with them, and the LinkedIn video specs guide covers the other main launch channel.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a video be on X?

On a standard account, up to 140 seconds, which is two minutes and twenty seconds. Premium subscribers can upload much longer videos, but X's help pages and developer documents give different limits, so check X's current Premium page before relying on a number.

What is the maximum video file size on X?

512 MB for a standard account, according to X's help page on videos. If your file is larger, lower the bitrate when you export. Our free video file size estimator shows what bitrate fits under the limit.

Can I post a vertical video on X?

Yes. X accepts shapes from 1:2.39 to 2.39:1, which includes 9:16. The help page lists a maximum of 1200 by 1900 pixels for vertical video, so a 1080 by 1920 file is slightly over that number. Test the upload, or export a vertical version at 1080 by 1900 or smaller.

What frame rate should I use for X?

X lists a maximum of 40 frames per second. Exports at 24, 25, 29.97 or 30 frames per second are all within the limit. Higher frame rates such as 60 need to be converted before upload.
